This side event places a spotlight on older women and catalyze political momentum to influence action and delivery, taking into account informal thematic consultations held by the President of the General Assembly on Our Common Agenda and provides an opportunity to further consider various proposals, options and potential means of implementation.

From new data on the connections between gender and climate change, to the use of markers to monitor environmental financing, and the use of geospatial information and online tools to fill data gaps on disasters, this event will showcase efforts being undertaken for filling gender gaps with the use of innovation. It will also examine the importance of utilizing these data for evidence-based decision making, in order to find solutions that truly respond to the environmental needs of women and men.

Despite evidence that climate change and environmental disasters disproportionately harm women and girls, and that women and girls’ social and political leadership on these issues support progress and impact, gender data gaps persist in building women’s and girls’ resilience. In this session, panelists will present on the prevailing challenges with framing gender impacts in climate and environment crisis and disaster assessments (including COVID-19), identify gaps in measurement/data collection, and highlight promising solutions.

The objective of this dialogue is to learn from positive experiences and highlight how countries can ‘build back better’, while prioritizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will also contribute to the 2022 annual theme of the Economic and Social Council and the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
