Humanists in Northern Uganda, formerly Humanist Empowerment of Livelihoods in Uganda (HELU), remains the only organized Secular organization in Northern Uganda. We have been founded on the basis of the fundamental ethical understanding of the world provided by the overarching humanist framework with respect for individual autonomy and dignity, a rational understanding of ourselves, the importance of scientific methodology, findings, and substantiated, respect for human rights. In short, human beings are the same people every day, everywhere, who must coexist without prejudice. Since its foundation and transition from HELU into Humanists NUg, the organization has transformed lives since 2009 with many of the beneficiaries being vulnerable women in the post-war poverty-ravaged society in Gulu, Northern Uganda. A society strongly beholden to beliefs in and the consequences of witchcraft and religious dogma.
Humanists NUg is a membership-based organization with a well-written and working constitution. The General Assembly is the highest-ranking organ of the organization followed by Executive Committee members comprising of the Profile Page 2 of 3 Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and 4 Executive Members. The Executive Committee Members are elected after every two years in General Assembly.

Humanism As described in the organization’s constitution: Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance that affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through ethics based on human and other natural values in a spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality. The Organisation accepts the Amsterdam Declaration 2002, and the elaboration of principles issued by the Humanists International. The Organisation is humanistic, non-religious, non-political, non-denominational, and non-racial. Vision A more rational and forward-thinking society.

Objectives
1) To promote a state with a neutral life stance (having a duty of religious neutrality), meaning it must neither endorse nor prohibit any belief or nonbelief;
2) To promote the right of every individual to live and practice any religion or none in a diverse society of different customs, norms, traditions, and beliefs (respect for human rights and human dignity);
3) To promote the ideas and philosophy of humanism; 4) To offer secular education on all levels to the society; 5) To offer members a social and organizational framework for life stance identity, fellowship, and care services.

Values
To uphold honesty, reason, critical thinking, and scientific knowledge to understand the world around us. Organizational values are accountability, transparency, democracy, and teamwork. Our Activities In the past, we concentrated more on supporting vulnerable women with projects, that support their social standing in society. A Ugandan society dominated by men in finance, property ownership, and literacy.
